Who Is the Servant?

When we peer into the historical context of this incredible Passover night, an important custom surfaces. When guests entered a dwelling to celebrate the Passover, shoes were removed and feet washed by a servant before they headed to the table. Someone was missing at this Passover meal—the servant. When the disciples arrived, apparently no servant was on duty, so they removed their shoes and proceeded to the table with dirty feet. Not one of them was motivated to take up the washing chore. Later, the almighty Son of God took on the role of the servant in the room. Jesus’ words, “I have set you an example,” must have burrowed deeply into the disciples’ minds and hearts while eyes sought the floor. That night, Jesus taught His beloved disciples through His own example that they were to serve others, and then He left for the cross.

“Have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.” “Honor one another above yourselves.” Words that are hard to shake off. When older mentors incorporate flexibility into mentoring, they become the servant in the room. They value others above themselves. They wash feet. We are sometimes convinced the younger ones should respect our ways and wash our feet. In some ways that may be appropriate. But how will young women learn to be servants if we don’t show them? When we’re the servants in the room, they see how it is done. We teach them to wash feet as we wash theirs. Isn’t that the way Jesus did it? Older mentors who take up the role of servant make deep impressions on young women’s minds. The mentor’s ways become memorable, an example burned into a young heart. Let the serving start with us!
